International Events

Outrigger festivals and race events are held in many countries and are particularly popular throughout the Pacific Rim. Some of our members have taken part in events such as:

In 2009 a master men’s crew and master women’s crew made up of paddlers from Maitahi and Motueka waka ama clubs took part in the Vaka Eiva festival in Rarotonga. The crews competed in 12km and 18km ocean races, sprint and fun races, and the big event of the festival, the 37km Round Raro Relay race. One of the paddlers, Jane Reed, described it as an amazing experience. "While we didn’t place we had an awesome time," she said.

In 2010 Carmel Barrett attended the World Sprints in New Caledonia, competing with Megan Wilson and Claire Sykes from Motueka and a team of other alpha babes for a crack at the World Sprints titles. Carmel said it was a great trip for all involved and she learned an awful lot from the experience. Claire Sykes won the OC1 Master Woman World Sprints Champion title in great style.
