Found: paddles

2 paddles were found floating in Nelson harbour last week by a work colleague.

They are not Maitahi paddles.

I have them in the boot of my car.

If anyone knows who they may belong to please let me know so they can be returned.

Kaiteriteri beach (In front of shoreline cafe) 12.30pm enter/race brief/Karakia then start 1pm

Categories/distance
Waka ama- 10km
Surf ski/racing kayak - 12km
Sea kayaks - 10km
All categories Single craft only
All paddlers must be capable of self rescue.
Prize money for first man and women in each category, Minimum 3 entries per category. Spot prizes, Enter on the day, No entry fee, Start training! Honour KP
Prize giving by KPs family will be after last craft is in.

Hi everyone

What a day Saturday was. I want to thank everyone for such a great day even though it did not end well for me. I am over the hypothermia now and feel great.

I am still wondering how Karen (Skilton) is (you're one tough cookie!)

Bring it on next year.. I am a bit sad that I could not say goodbye to you all. Thanks for being great sports. Remember it is not the winning but getting there first.

So if you ever venture to Auckland say hello etc.

You are always welcome.

CERTIFICATE IN WAKA AMA
Level 4

What’s it about?
The Certificate in Waka Ama aims to provide an opportunity for people who are interested in waka ama, to learn how to paddle and get involved in the waka ama community.

Entry Requirements
Students interested in this course should have an interest in waka ama and desire to learn.

Fees: $576.50

Content of Programme
The programme comprises of four components:
1. Ngā kōrero o Mua – History of Waka Ama
2. Te Hanga Rauemi – Waka Ama resources
3. Te Hoe Waka – Basic paddling strokes, techniques,
waka positions and calling
4. Te Whakapakari Tinana – Waka fitness including nutrition and diet

Delivery of Programme
The course will run 1 weekend a month from Oct to Jan in Nelson and will be facilitated by Matahi Brightwell a very well know and respected member of the NZ paddling fraternity

Matahi Whakataka Brightwell, Ngāti Porou
Waka Ama Tutor, Master Carver

Matahi Whakataka Brightwell has been instrumental in the re-birth and growth of the sport of Waka Ama in Aotearoa. He has been actively involved in the revival of traditional methods in building, navigating and sailing and is well regarded for his facilitation of waka ama wānanga throughout the Pacific. Matahi has many years experience coaching waka ama at a club, regional, national and international level.

Hi Everyone

Just to let you all know that Nga Maata Waka will again be hosting the Caroline Bay regatta this year, on the 7^th of May at the Timaru Yacht Club, Caroline Bay , Timaru.

We are aware that a lot of Chch paddlers are either not training or doing limited training at the moment for a number of reasons related to the 22^nd of February and have provided options that will allow for these folk to still get away from the shakes and on the water.

As usual we will be providing races for OC1, 2 and 6s at the Novice and competitive levels with options on how many laps of the 5km course you do based on where you are at with water time.

Maitahi OCC would like to offer a huge thanks to the hard working team who gave up 9 hours off their Sunday night to help with the Warehouse stock take as part of a fundraising opportunity for the club. Initially the team of Matt Wilson, Charmaine Gallagher, Richard Butler, Rosalie Adamson, Rongomai Flavell, Pip Jenkins, Zoe Hovarth, Gillene Haldine, Jilleen Chandler and Karen Clark were due to work from 7 to midnight but instead worked through to 4am!

Without the selfless efforts of these members we couldn’t upgrade or maintain our gear as well as fundraise for the new waka we will shortly order in time for next summer.

On behalf of all members and especially the committee thanks for your support.
