CERTIFICATE IN WAKA AMA
Level 4 What’s it about? The Certificate in Waka Ama aims to provide an opportunity for people who are interested in waka ama, to learn how to paddle and get involved in the waka ama community. Entry Requirements Students interested in this course should have an interest in waka ama and desire to learn. Fees: $576.50 Content of Programme The programme comprises of four components: 1. Ngā kōrero o Mua – History of Waka Ama 2. Te Hanga Rauemi – Waka Ama resources 3. Te Hoe Waka – Basic paddling strokes, techniques, waka positions and calling 4. Te Whakapakari Tinana – Waka fitness including nutrition and diet Delivery of Programme The course will run 1 weekend a month from Oct to Jan in Nelson and will be facilitated by Matahi Brightwell a very well know and respected member of the NZ paddling fraternity Waka Ama Tutor:
Matahi Whakataka Brightwell, Ngāti Porou Waka Ama Tutor, Master Carver Matahi Whakataka Brightwell has been instrumental in the re-birth and growth of the sport of Waka Ama in Aotearoa. He has been actively involved in the revival of traditional methods in building, navigating and sailing and is well regarded for his facilitation of waka ama wānanga throughout the Pacific. Matahi has many years experience coaching waka ama at a club, regional, national and international level. Want to know more?
